The Flamingos

  It’s been over a year in the making, but Olive’s flamingo tattoo is finally done. Feels good to get new ink again! I wanted to take a minute to explain the tattoo. Some of you might not know but Olive went through a really hard year a while ago with her skin and eczema. She was bed ridden for a long while, had open sores all over her legs, and was just miserable. Praise God for His faithfulness, the team of Doctors who knew just how to help and the medicine she’d need, and everyone who prayed, she’s going on a year of being a happy, healthy little girl. During her time being sick she had the opportunity to go on a 2nd grade, end of year field trip to the zoo. We knew she’d have just started her medication by then, but didn’t know how she’d be physically. But we paid for the trip and just prayed she’d be able to go. By the time the field trip came around she was finally doing much better and was able to go and when she came back the first thing she talked about was seeing the flam...

Living Generously

“Dad tax!” I say as I reach across the couch, take one of my daughter’s M&Ms and pop it into my mouth. Kendall simply smiles and rolls her eyes. The Dad tax is well established in our house. From fries, to candy, to popcorn and other snacks, the girls know that the Dad Tax is coming. Once I levied the dad tax on the girls while we were having dinner with a friend who didn’t have kids. He seemed confused at first, then asked why I didn’t feel guilty taking their food. I had to think about it for a minute because in all my years levying the Dad tax, no one had ever really asked me to explain it in depth. After a moment I responded with two reasons. First, they had more than they needed, at the end of every meal both of my girls had extra food left over. Second, I had paid for the food and so, technically, the food was mine anyway. Thoughts on Systemic Racism and DEI

 Over the course of the last few years, but specifically in the last month I’ve done some reading and, maybe more importantly, had a number of conversations regarding DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and the topic of systemic racism. These conversations were with a somewhat diverse group of people falling into many different categories when it comes to; age, race, culture, and gender. During these conversations it became clear to me that there is often a misconception of what the topic and term “systemic racism” seems to embody as well as what the policies, broken or not, around DEI attempt to do. As a Pastor in a local church, and more importantly as a Christ follower, I believe firmly that each of us is created with inherent worth. As we read in the creation account in Genesis, each one of us is created as an image bearer of God.
